On Saturday 15th August 2009, Captain Tomato and I were riding our bikes down the hill of Cotter Hut Road, returning from the start of the AAWT walk to Cotter River past Split Rock and Coronet Peak. It was just before 5pm and the sun was very low in the West. We stopped and looked across the valley, and the rock, in the picture above, was glowing incredibly with a strong warm crimson - reflecting and absorbing the red rays of the sun. Right away, I knew that two things were going to happen - I was going to stand below that rock and place a cache there so other people would also have an extra incentive to see this orangey wall. Of course, if you want to see it glow crimson then you probably have to go to the other side of the valley.

I love massive granite boulders especially when it also has sharp clean lines! Unfortunately I didn't visit this spot when I found Tankengine's GCJ163 Lego Land which is not too far away - and is also another absolutely marvellous location. I also placed GA1565 Sentinel Lookout very close by - perhaps 15m to the right and about 30m higher.

Finding the cache... Ok study all three photos and then find a box shaped alcove under that view. In photo view 2, you see a massive flake. The ammo box cache is hidden behind a flake which is partially hidden by this flake.

Oh BTW, if you face the orange wall, there is a huge block on your right. If you are like me, you will have to go and have some fun getting up on top of it - it is a little tricky in cachers' terms (4.5) - you just have to easily scramble your way through the maze. There are even a couple of Winglen lounges up on top. It is a cool location because you are level with the start of the base of the orange wall. I didn't hide the cache up near there because the chances of finds of this cache are already pretty low by not listing it on GC.com and it isn't a metro drive by.

Having completed the GC cahe, Ridge of Stone, the GCA cache Sentinel Lookout, I decided to continue the adventure in the ICY conditions. It was DRY, everything was DRY, but REALLY COLD. Around the northern face of these boulders I skirted, climbed a cascade of boulders, and WOW, I was rewarded with a magnificent orange rock face - BEAUTIFUL just as the sun was disappearing behind some clouds, really ORANGE GLOW. I whipped the camera out, but didn't quite get the full orange glow from a setting sun. Also took a pic of cache and snow nearby too.
WONDERFUL little alcove, MAGNIFICENT specimen of rock, wonderful colours - top spot Squirrel. How did you find that! Did it take much time to locate it?
As I had finished Red Sentinel, (Man it was COLD),(My helmet was keeping me warm), I eyed off the range westward and saw snow coming in BIG time. Took a pic of it coming in, pic may not show the full effect - another visual feast of the snow coming in, a day of great sights.
I was already having snow flurries upon me, so I made a beeline for my bike, 15 mins away. A very gentle breeze, snow flurries, minus 2 degrees up there, made it back to my bike, unlocked it, and I was down the hill fast and got to the car in the campground at 5:45pm, with enough light to spare, but only just. It was 3 degrees at the campground. I also saw 4 black wild pigs up there, snort snort.
Thanks Squirrel for some magnificent caches with fantastic views & Great formations. Coooeeeeeee

Squirrel - you mention the 3m drop at the wooden bridge, but you failed to mention the 10 metre drop after the bridge. And you also forgot to mention, the bridge may have snow and ice on it !!!!!!
OK, I found the GC cache just along the ridge line, then came up here. I found the ICY wooden bridge, worked out a way across - sort of chimneying with my arms between the adjacent rocks and placing very little footage on the slippery logs. That navigated - OMG - the 10 metre drop that I now had to walk/crawl beside. That negotiated, I was soon rewarded with a FANTASTIC view, and a cache too. Took the Mandatory picture - proving my (stupidity) presence of finding the cache. All the while I was up there, no breeze. Just as I was signing the log, a gust came through - WOW - that chasm acts like a wind tunnel, WOW. That died down just as quickly as it came, I renegotiated the 10m drop, the icy logs (Pics taken to prove it), then off I went to find the Red Sentinel. Found that too.
As I had finished Red Sentinel, (Man it was COLD),(My helmet was keeping me warm), I eyed off the range westward and saw snow coming in BIG time. Here is your chance to create your own.
OpenStreetMap is a project aimed squarely at creating and providing free geographic data such as street maps to anyone who wants them. The project was started because most maps you think of as free actually have legal or technical restrictions on their use, holding back people from using them in creative, productive or unexpected ways.

My effort has started here in Rivett and Chapman with was done mostly with the Yahoo map tracing with some GPX files loaded to help. ie you can do most of this purely online.
but feel free to trace bike paths and footpaths with your GPSr tracks.

To post your find register with OpenStreetMap and trace a suburb or significant area either and/ or name roads or POIs for already mapped areas.
When you post your find mark the approximate Co-ords of your work and/or a link to the map area.

You can trace roads using the Potlatch online tool and the map tiles are rendered weekly (wed).
More information can be found on there Wiki site

If you are just naming existing streets please spell out Street and Road fully ie don't use Rd or St abbreviations

Note there is another site which has translated these img files which can be loaded into Garmin GPSr which means you can use your work after you have crafted your map, or you can now download Routable versions for Garmin GPS devices from this site.

mtbikerozFoundFINALLY. That WAS a PAINFUL experience. I found it easier riding the required 148.1km, than the overall procedure.
Last saturday, I started off finding a GC cache in west Belconnen. I then (all on the bike of course, from home), went and circumnavigated the following lakes with the GPS tracker on: Lake Ginninderra, Yerrabi Pond, Lake Burley Griffen and finally Lake Tuggeranong, then back home, completing 148.1km for the day.
That night I loaded the gpx files into open street map, after the tricky gpxBabel conversion process.
Sunday, I was notified the tracks were successfully downloaded - indeed they were. Then drop out after drop out, unresponsiviness after unresponsiviness, their "maintenance" symbol appearing many times (which from their Help, indicates they are having problems at their end (congestion etc) ), and after 2 hrs, of hassle, I had loaded and named Yerrabi pond cycle track and Lake Ginninderra cycle track. I then gave it away for the day as it kept on telling me they were too congested.
Monday afternoon - I finished Lake Burley Griffen and Lake Tuggeranong cycle tracks super QUICK, then checked everything - and all 4 Canberra Lake cycle tracks are in, loaded and named! Yay.
Thanks mtrax for the learning and interesting experience. Not your fault they are congested our Sundays.
So, now, the cycle tracks circumnavuigating the following 4 Canberra lakes are in!
1 - Lake Ginninderra, Belconnen.
2 - Yerrabi Pond, Gunghalin.
3 - Lake Burley Griffen, including ALL the basins.
4 - Lake Tuggeranong.

It has ended up outside my first ACT "home" (McQuarie hostel), now being rebuilt as The Realm Hotel and appartments.
There are two bus shelters close together. It is placed in the more cache safe one (orange seat) nm7s9FoundFor the life of me, I couldn't extract the log from the cache. Fortunately a pocket knife in my car had a pair of pliers in it.terrortorianNoteReentering coordinates? do not know where that express bus went.terrortorianNoteNot quite so central. I have dropped it off just up the road. terrortorianFoundTook a run out here to see what we could see. cache was quickly found after we stopped at a local sporting ground. That Magnet sure is strong. Will drop off after work tonight. Maybe somewhere very central.mtraxNoteCloser to the Stars is closed so a quick move done insteadmtraxFoundKept Cache in Weston Creek.McPhanFoundHad to wait for the bus and then outrace a commuter to the shelter to nab.McPhanNoteCockatoos.TealbyFoundRealised this was not too far from home, so grabbed it on my way past - googlemaps showed it on the other side of the road, which added an unexpected degree of difficulty, especially as I hadn't bothered taking a GPS. But all was well in the end - that magnet sure is strong! TFTC. TealbyNoteThis should be easy to "peruse"...TankengineFoundNice easy find... Although could be tricky at different times!TankengineNoteHmmm - not as easy to relocate as I thought! It seems not all busstops are created equal!Ash-DashNoteDID IT VERY QUICKLYAsh-DashFoundoh yea my first gca cache boooyaa.

Welcome to the "Canberra's Battlecache". Just like the board game ("Battleships") you guess a square that contains a ship take a shot by hiding the cache in this square then you are told if you got a hit or a miss. Once all ships are sunk the Game is over and the player who has most hits is awarded the win. The winner can proved Leja1965 with the start position of the next game.

How to play

Move the cache from one square to another square. Report the new cache location via Geocaching.com.au and Leja1965 will make a log of hit/miss or miss fire. Then someone else will move the cache to a new location. A square is represented by the grid below Each square starts at a new minute from S 35? 12 to S 35? 21 and E 149? 0 to E 149? 09.

The Battlecache has one new rule. The concept of a mine. One Square will be a mine if the player places the cache in this square the mine explodes and the player is hospitalised for the next 5 moves.

Example:

Cache is placed at S 35? 15.345 E 149? 07.344 then square S 35? 15 E 149? 07 or d8 is the shot location.

Current Game

Bearer of seal envelop containing a copy if the ship positions is Sacada. He can play as long as envelop is not opened.

A player can not take two shots. The player must wait for another player to move the cache

The cache cannot be moved to a new square until the result of the shot has been added to the Log by Leja1965

As I was driving home from my parents last night an unknown icon popped up on the TomTom. Checking I found that it was this one - so I nabbed it.
I won't put it out until the weekend as it is slightly damp, so I'll give it time to dry.mtbikerozNoteWelcome back Leja1965.leja1965NoteI am sorry I neglected this for so long.

Good LuckSecretSquirrel-BJCFound5(+866=871) 5pm
Thanks Leja1965 for a very novel and fun concept. If there was a critical mass of cachers who wanted to play, it would be great. I think there is just such a huge number of caches to chase at the moment - at least for most people!
Thanks MtBikeroz for a very well-hidden cache - amazing I found it in that jungle!
I am going to make a move, and then when you (leja1965) return, you can score Tealby, mbo and myself all at once.
Great fun!

SecretSquirrel-BJCNoteHit?!?!?!?!
If mbo hit the carrier at B4, and the carrier has 5 cells, then I get a hit at B3 - if I was accurate - that map is a little hard to see properly for my old eyes.
SecretSquirrel-BJCNoteHi Leja
Are you still looking after the Canberra BattleCache?
I was going to make a move but theoretically I can't until you judge the previous move(s).
Tealby and Mtbikeroz have moved with no confirmation of hit/miss
Regards
SSmtbikerozNoteA HIT!!!!!!
Leja seems to have gone AWOL, ??????
Cache is hidden at base of a large shrub (4m x 4m) right adjacent the base of the trunk, hard to get to because of dead branches, and partially covered in leaves.mtbikerozFoundFOUND IT - FINALLY, oh FINALLY.
Leja?????????????? Are you still there?????????????????????????????????? (I'm serious).
Also, I have also removed some sexually explicit literature from within - someone found it!!!!!!
I'll drop it off soon, hopefully getting a hit.
LEJA?????EynowdNoteAfter a screwup on my part, I ended up putting it back where I'd found it. As far as I know, it's still still at the coords Tealby listed in her log entry.traineediplomatNoteIs this still alive?EynowdFoundFound this not too far from one of my cache hides.
Now, where to put it now...TealbyFoundFound with Biggles303 - he took a couple of soldiers & replaced with a glow in the dark dinosaur & an elephant. A good start to the day, that only went downhill from here with 2 subsequent DNFs :(
TFTCTealbyNoteQuick fire at D6 - round fell into a pretty obvious spot not too far from a couple of Eynowd mystery caches - the ones I couldn't find!!TankengineFoundFound it! Now to take aim...TankengineNoteFire1 - at J5...
Now to see if I hit anything...leja1965NoteThomas missed. All are free to move cache except Tankengine.leja1965NoteB8 Miss. Sorry Eagle did send me the coordinates a few weeks ago but got lost in my Junk Mail folder. All are free to move the cache.lattejedNoteEarth to Eagle over, where have you landed? overleja1965NoteCan not see a change to the coordinates. Please email me the coordinates so I can update.eagleFoundFound it easy enough. Coords supplied care of my Magellan Gold. Good Luck. leja1965NoteB7 Hit on Carrier. HMAS Belconnen is on her way down. She is listing badly. All are free to move the cache except Lattejed. Have fun and a merry Christmas to all.lattejedFoundAfter recalibrating my sonar I went out for a quick attack. After a quick find, I reversed course and returned to the main fleet (Commodore wagon).
New coords are S35 13.448 E149 06 337. Depth approximately 598m, but look out for the old torpedo tubes nearby. sacadaNoteS35o13.460 E149o5.986

I have had an incorrect setting on my GPS that has thrown out the coords by about 200 metres. Sorry for the goose chase lattejed.lattejedNot FoundNo luck again, it must be someone else's turn.sacadaNoteNot too many hiding places there. You shouldn't get stumped! Not over the fence.lattejedNot FoundAnother DNF, my satellite guided sonar kept putting me on the wrong side of the anti-submarine netting (the fence line). leja1965NoteB6 Hit on Carrier. Well done Sacada. All can now move cache except for Sacada this round.sacadaFoundS35.13.559 E149.05.916
Nearly gave up after not being able to find it for a while. I then decided to keep going and broaden my circle. Glad I did.
I have now relocated not too far away.
Took marbles and left toy soldiers and ball.leja1965NoteA5 is a Miss. All are free to move the cache except for lattejedlattejedFoundAhoy there, I took the bathythermograph along this time and was able to break through to make a clean pick up. Well, I popped out and had a look and cache is still sitting there in full view waiting for someone to grab.

I have a new GPS, so here are new coords to hopefully get more accuracy.Mr DarcyNot FoundThe satellite gods were kind, or so they claimed.
EPE 3m which is about as good as I get, but no submarines here. Not even their heat signature! I looked high. I looked low. I poked. I prodded. I peered. All to no avail.leja1965NoteWill get Sacada to check.lattejedNot FoundNice afternoon to search for a sub, but too many trees were interfering with my sonar. leja1965NoteB5 Hit on Carrier. Found and moved. Under baby gum.leja1965Not FoundWent to put the papers in at lunch time spent whole time looking for cache. Couldn't find it so either it has moved on and not reported yet or I am blind.leja1965NoteStill a miss but People are free to move the cachesacadaNoteGoogle Earth have updated their maps. I checked 'Pole Position' and it is now very close to the cache. Also, your house is now fixed, Leja :DsacadaNot FoundHad a try to find this afternoon. Didn't have my GPSr with me so I was looking at the Google Earth image. Looked on all three levels as I didn't think it would be on the road. Failed. Will try again later with GPRs.leja1965NoteSacada is trying to catch up to add the paper notices. So until he does dont worry about last rule.leja1965NoteGoogle earth due to the nature of flat photos and curved earth is inheriently inaccurate. You only have to look at some well known caches that have correct coords to see the error (Pole Position) so I wouldn't be too concerned. My House is split and in two different location on google earth :-).
It is always good to check anyway.Mr DarcyNoteDouble checked the location. It was with reasonable limits. I will never trust Google Earth again!
It is not on the main road, but that still leaves an interesting 3D challenge as Sacada found out ROFL
PS did you check out that upper level tunnel that goes in from the other side?
LateEdit: The co-ordinates were good. Shame I can't say the same about my eyesight.
Corrected location: S35 17.200 E149 07.060leja1965NoteFirst Salvo fired into Square H3 resulting in a Miss. The cache can now be moved. Hope you enjoy.leja1965NoteF8 is a Missleja1965NoteFirst Shot (I play just to get started)

E 149 02.339Mr DarcyNoteI checked the new location on Google Earth. It shows the co-ordinates about 30m from the actual location. I will recheck on the ground tomorrow as there is a busy road in the vicinity. It is still in the same zone though (Phew!)Mr DarcyFoundI Love the concept, but I'm probably too busy to play actively. Still I couldn't resist a FTF and my first GCA only cache
New location has an EPE of 4.9m
