SRR - Central Mount Stuart Here you will find a cairn and plaque near Central Mount Stuart. The explorer John McDouall Stuart accompanied by William Kekwick ascended and named Mount Sturt on 23rd April 1860. <img alt="" src="http://geocaching.com.au/gallery/images/ga1583/134.jpg" /> Later the name Mount Sturt was changed to Central Mount Stuart in honour of the explorer. John Hayes Rock Hole Camping Area is at the end of a 4 Km "High Clearance Vehicles Only" track, but it is well worth the trip in. As a special encouragement to cachers I have placed a traditional GC cache here as well as this virtual. This is a small cache that has room for a logbook and a few small swaps only.

The Green Tree Frog is a well known Australian amphibian. They are a cute little animal with an engaging, magnetic personality and a cartoon-like appearance. These frogs seem to be able to stick to almost anything. Green Tree Frogs can be found in many places, typically hanging on trees, under leaves or even sheltering behind and under rocks. They have local populations so it is not recommended that they be moved to another geographic region. The Rules of Frogging 1. The frog is to stay within the northern part of the NT. 2. Once found the frog must be moved and hidden again within 48 hours 3. ENCOURAGEMENT AND THE DARWIN CONVENTION CENTRE.

The spectacular Darwin Convention Centre, perched on the edge of Darwin harbour, is the architectural highlight of the Darwin waterfront. Its striking design and unique setting make it one of the most distinctive landmarks in Northern Australia. To find this cache you must simply obtain a photo of the new Darwin Convention Centre. The photograph must contain you and your GPS, or at the very least your GPS in the shot, otherwise you will not be able to log the cache. But wait, there's more! As encouragement to Darwin Cachers to hide some new caches in the top end, you can only log this cache if you provide a link to a new cache that you have hidden in the Top End of the Northern Territory within 2 days either side of logging this cache.   To summarise, in order to log this cache you need a photo of the Darwin Convention Centre with you and your GPS in the shot, and you also need a link to a new cache that you have hidden in the Top End of the Northern Territory within 2 days of finding this cache. All logs that do not conform to the above will be deleted! In order to provide further encourgament to new hiders, you may find and log this cache as often as you like, but you must post a new photo. <h1 id="title_div3166090100" property="dc:title"> <h1 id="title_div3166090100" property="dc:title" style="text-align: center">Memorial to those that died in the inaugural NT Cannonball Run, S of the Alice Springs, Stuart Highway, Central Australia.</h1> </h1> <h1 id="title_div3166090100" property="dc:title" style="text-align: center"><img height="480" alt="Gallery" width="640" src="http://gallery.geocaching.com.au/pics/ga1418/167.jpg" /> </h1> <h1 property="dc:title"> The Northern Territory Cannonball Run was held from 22 May to the 27 in 1994 on the Stuart Highway from Darwin to Alice Springs and return, a distance of nearly 1600 kms, and attracted 118 racing enthusiasts from all over the world with their expensive machines. The race contained three distinct driving phases within the one event. These were the "flying miles", the timed sectors and, covering by far the greatest distance, normal, everyday driving during which there was no competitive element. The "flying miles" were a test of a car's acceleration with cars cross the starting line at 60 km/h and 1600 m later their speed was recorded by radar, with points awarded accordingly. The timed sections of the run were approximately 100 km stretches to which set times was applied. Cannonballers lost points on these sections by arriving either too late or too early by more than three minutes. While these sections of the run were happening, the road was open to regular traffic, although police swept the road ahead, side roads were manned and the travelling public and commercial vehicles were warned. During these sections, as throughout the run, Cannonball drivers were subject to the same laws as anyone else. It is to be pointed out, though, that in the Northern Territory doesn't exist a specified speed limit on the open road. On 24 May, during one of the timed sections near Alice Springs, a Ferrari F40 crashed into a checkpost killing its occupants, the Japanese duo Akihiro Kabe and codriver Okano (first name unknown) and two track officials, Tim Linklater and Keith Pritchard. The giant Anmatjere man and woman Two years ago the spotlight was on the small town of Aileron, just north of Alice Springs. It was the proud owner of a 17-metre high sculpture of an Aboriginal man which sits on a hill overlooking the town. It's based on a traditional man from the local Anmatjere tribe. Ted Egan's son Mark built the man, and is now building him a partner. "Since the Anmatjere man has gone up all the local women from the Anmatjere tribe said they wanted a woman and a kid and so now Greg has decided he will get one." Mark has to build a small-scale model, and then scale it up from the and then lift it up with a crane. "You need over a tonne of steel, then you got mesh wrapped around where all the skin in, then you have three layers of bird wire. And then you have a couple of tonne of cement on top of that." He says the man took him a year to make and the woman, who will be placed at the front of the Aileron roadhouse, will take four months. Mark says he will start putting the skeleton up for the female sculpture in the next two weeks. "The hardest part will be getting it all to look right because there will be a child around her leg. Peter Egerton-Warburton In 1872 Warburton left South Australia as leader of an expedition that included his son Richard and J. Lewis. It was financed and provided with seventeen camels and six months supplies by (Sir) Walter Hughes and (Sir) Thomas Elder, and sought to link the province with Western Australia. After leaving Alice Springs in April 1873, they endured long periods of extreme heat with little water, and survived only by killing the camels for meat. They reached the Oakover River with Warburton strapped to a camel. On 11 January 1874 they were brought to Charles Harper's de Grey station in northern Western Australia. They had conquered the formidable Great Sandy Desert to become the first to cross the continent from the centre to the west. Lieutenant Snow Elliott  Elliott, the halfway point between Darwin and Alice Springs, 250 kilometres north of Tennant Creek, is predominantly a service provider to surrounding pastoralists. The town has a population of 700 and was named after Army Lieutenant Snow Elliott who established an army staging camp in the area for northbound troops during World War II. Prior to this, Elliott was just Number 8 Bore on the massive Newcastle Waters Station. Kulumindini is the traditional Aboriginal name for Elliott and the town lies on important Dreaming tracks. Educational walks through the Jim Rennie Memorial Park, organised through the Elliott Council, offer insight into the areaDs indigenous heritage. Barrow Creek Telegraph Station John McDouall Stuart named this site in 1860 after a then member of the South Australian Parliament. It became the chosen site for a repeater station in 1871 and the station as it stands today was officially opened on 16 August 1872 by Charles Todd as part of the morse repeater network. It was one of 15 such repeater stations on a network traversing Australia and linking Australia to Europe, providing essential communication services. This lonely outpost was to get some company by the way of a store and hotel erected in 1932, just in time to take advantage of the migration to Tennant Creek during the gold rush. The pub is open today serving a migration of a different kind. <h1> SRR - Wycliffe Welsh Men </h1> This virtual is located at the self-proclaimed UFO capital of Australia, Wycliffe Well. Some in town say they have seen mysterious objects flying over head, making loud sounds. Personally i'd be more in favour of a scientific explanation: either aeroplanes or just a struggling town wanting to make a few dollars! Either way this is a good excuse to get out and strech the legs on your long journey. At gz there is a petrol station and camping facilities. There is also a small display of "UFO's". To log this cache, you simply need find out what it is like to be an alien, by becomming one (the plywood mural with holes cut out for your head). All thats needed is a photo posted with your log of you and your gps as aliens. If passing by I can highly recomend a vist to the pub very close to GZ to have one of there Hilux burgers... mmmmm... one of the best burgers I have had in the territory! Mrs GP had the barra burger and said it was equally good and massive! They also have a great little caravan park out back and a thong tree! Its only a short detour off the highway but well worth it! To log this cache, you will need to find a sign out the front of the pub, letting you know about what angle you can park your car at. You will need to email me the angle at which you can park your car and provide a photo in your log of yourself and your GPS, with any of the towns interesting features in the background. TFTC 2009-06-26T00:00:00Z The Red Devils Found Sort of stuffed up here.lol..didnt get the required picture, long story!.We were going to camp at the pubs caravan park, but it was packed, i mean really packed, and we prefer to be more isolated..Anyway, we decided to drive back up the road to suss things out, found the old aerodrome...AWESOME!..No signs to say no camping or anything, no one there either. So..set up camp and went down the pub (forgot camera..DOH)..Enjoyed a meal and the entertainment from the guy who dose all the funny wooden signs. The following morning we took a heap of pictures..see gallery...and were amused by the almost constant stream of visiting caravans from those who had stayed down at the pub, got some envious glances from them when they realised they too could have enjoyed the serenity of an awesome spot too. You are free to walk around the buildings at your own leisure or you can go to the local info centre and get keys to have a realy good look at the insides of the buildings. The cache does not require you to get the keys, but will send you on a Treasure Hunt. To log this cache you are required to find some stoves in one of the buildings and email me details about its whereabouts. You will need to tell me who most likely used these stoves and the coordinates of the building. <h1> SRR - Larrimah </h1> This virtual cache is located just off the stuart highway along a road signposted to the "Pub." Here you will find a common sight in outback australia, the reuse of historic train tracks as fences and cattle runs. Its an interesting little 'facility' worth a look. Now its more so appealing as there is a cache there! To log this cache, you will need to do the normal photo + GPS + the facility mentioned above. You will also need to email me with the details of the year and manufacturer of the rails. These will be printed on each rail and should not be hard to find. I was quite supprised when I found out just how old the train tracks realy were! <h1> SRR - Palmer </h1> The aussie outback has claimed many many lives. The monument at GZ is a memorial to one such person who passed and was burried somewhere near to thsi spot. C Palmer was appart of the Overland Telegraph Line which serviced most of australia and provided communication links to the rest of the world many many years ago. To log this virtual, simply take a photo of your GPS at the memorial plaque or the telegraph pole. Its a pity that there is no shade here, but it is still a good reason to stop the car and strech the legs. The Degree Confluence Project is an organized sampling of the world. There is a confluence within 79 kilometres of you if you're on the surface of Earth. If you locate this cache please create an account and log it as described on the web page above. The link for this confluence is: <a rel="nofollow" href="http://www.confluence.org/confluence.php?lat=-15&lon=132">DCP: 15 degrees south, 132 degrees east</a> The cache itself is of virtual nature as this area is frequented by fire and any container would become compromised very quickly in such an event. The confluence itself can be found after a 1.2km walk through very easy (i.e. flat) terrain. The round trip to the confluence from the nearest road takes about 45 minutes. Vechile access is via the Dry River Road which at the time of the visit was a very well maintained road. There may be problems during the wet but that is to be expected up here in the territory. A 4x4 should be able to access. The site is about 15kms off the Victoria Highway and is an hours drive from Katherine. To log this cache, simply take a photo of your gps with the coords s15 00.000 e132 00.000 at gz. It would also be great for you to log some photos into the degree confluence project but this is not essential. Can you find it?

In this absolutly beautiful spot, there is a neat little piece of aborigional art. A simple hand print of a child. This art is well hidden in the gorge and it is your task to find it. This should not be too difficult but you will need to get to gz first and then start your search. This involves a reasonable amount of rock scrambling and may involve wading. The art is within 50 meters of GZ, and should not be too difficult to find (although they may be my famous last words). There is a mine out there, a hill semi-removed and shafts left exposed.

This virtual requires you to find that mine (not hard with the co-ords) but more so to the point find out why it was there. This is not a hard task given the evidence left by your feet, but its a place worth stopping for a look and a bit of a noodle. Just be wary that those mounds are not mounds, they are mullock heaps with mine shafts near-by. Some are deep, most are not but be wary with geokiddies. A realy interesting spot with some magical colours all aound. To log the cache, take a photo of youself and a sample of the mineral being mined at gz. Hope that you enjoy! Every time I drove past there were FA-18s taking off, but every time I stopped they were nowhere to be seen. Set on burst rate (15 frames per second) I finally managed to get a shot of a USAF military tanker taking off. The composite photo shows wheels just off the ground, wheels fully up, and the overhead shot. There is a delay between each chosen frame because it takes a while for the camera to save 30 frames before the next burst can be taken. <img src='http://garmin.geocaching.com.au/gallery/images/ga1220/4661556959.jpg'> I do have another 300 odd frames, including some where the aircraft occupies less than 20 pixels. What is it which sewage farms which always attract caches?

This is another sewage farm in palmerston which hosts a range of avian species from afar on their often long migrations. If your feeling adventurous you can drive around the boundary of this 'poo pond' to access the mangroves but just be sure not to stand downwind, it somewhat smells! The cache is one of my 'Dont Buy Nano's Off Ebay' nanos and does not fit a log because its too small! So i have included a serial number in the cache which you will need to record and email to me when you log the cache. Gunlom Falls are some spekky falls which are located in the southern section of the Kakado National Park. The falls trickle durning the dry but roar during the wet. Either way the plunge pool makes for a great swimming hole. The cache is located at the top of the falls which can be reached via a potentially difficult walk, which offers great views. The aim of this virtual cache is to take a photograph from the top of the waterfall which includes your vehicle in shot as well as your gps. This should be easy but may need some simple planning. Please post the photo with your cache log. A nice and easy virtual at Mamukala Wetlands which offers an oppotunity to view a myrid of kakadu's flora and fauna, from the comfort of a boardwalk. To log this cache, simply take a photo of one of the wetland species with your GPS in shot. You will also need to identify at least one of the species in shot using any resource available to you. A physical cache container was not placed at this location as maintenance can be very tedious and the wet season may cause problems. Our favourite (apart from the magnificant jabiru) is the jacana but they are too quick to photograph with the other requirements. Here is Geogirl with an egret. This virtual cache is located at the end of a short walk to the end of a boardwalk which ends in a viewing platform, from which crocodiles and rather large baramundi can often be seen. To log this cache, simply include a picture of one of the information boards and your gps in your log. Feel free to also add any other pictures you have taken near gz as its a very photogenic location. A physical cache container was not placed at this location as maintenance can be very tedious and the wet season may cause problems as this boardwalk goes underwater! 2009-08-27T00:00:00Z Shifter Brains Found Completed this cache after doing a Yellow Water cruise, which is the best way to see the area. TFTC 2009-04-21T00:00:00Z NTSTROM Found Got to Yellow Waters and found out that the boardwalk was closed due to large crocodiles in the area. Access was only granted to the boat ramp which is at the beginning of the boardwalk, so I obtained a photograph of an information board at the boat ramp. I also have some photos of the crocodile warnings. The photo taken at the boat ramp is at S12 53.769 E132 31.095 and is only 300 metres from the posted coords. This area is nothing special, infact at times the area can become somewhat messy, particularily in the wet season when cleaners rarely visit.
