The race contained three distinct driving phases within the one event. These were the "flying miles", the timed sectors and, covering by far the greatest distance, normal, everyday driving during which there was no competitive element. The "flying miles" were a test of a car's acceleration with cars cross the starting line at 60 km/h and 1600 m later their speed was recorded by radar, with points awarded accordingly. The timed sections of the run were approximately 100 km stretches to which set times was applied. Cannonballers lost points on these sections by arriving either too late or too early by more than three minutes. While these sections of the run were happening, the road was open to regular traffic, although police swept the road ahead, side roads were manned and the travelling public and commercial vehicles were warned. During these sections, as throughout the run, Cannonball drivers were subject to the same laws as anyone else. It is to be pointed out, though, that in the Northern Territory doesn't exist a specified speed limit on the open road.

On 24 May, during one of the timed sections near Alice Springs, a Ferrari F40 crashed into a checkpost killing its occupants, the Japanese duo Akihiro Kabe and codriver Okano (first name unknown) and two track officials, Tim Linklater and Keith Pritchard. An inquest found that the direct cause of the accident was driver error on the part of the Japanese team which entered the checkpoint at an excessive speed.

To log this virtual, simply take a photo of your GPS at the monument.

Happy hunting and safe drive.
NTSTROM Found Darrin, redcentredazza, and Megan, MAMEDINA, kindly volunteered to take me out to do some 4WD caches today. A very interesting place, we thought about staying here but the lure of Mataranka and the hot springs was too much. TFTC The Red Devils Found Sort of stuffed up here.lol..didnt get the required picture, long story!.We were going to camp at the pubs caravan park, but it was packed, i mean really packed, and we prefer to be more isolated..Anyway, we decided to drive back up the road to suss things out, found the old aerodrome...AWESOME!..No signs to say no camping or anything, no one there either. So..set up camp and went down the pub (forgot camera..DOH)..Enjoyed a meal and the entertainment from the guy who dose all the funny wooden signs. The following morning we took a heap of pictures..see gallery...and were amused by the almost constant stream of visiting caravans from those who had stayed down at the pub, got some envious glances from them when they realised they too could have enjoyed the serenity of an awesome spot too. It looks as though the National Trust had high hopes for this location, as they have obviously gone to quite some trouble with photographic displays etc inside the Northern Territorys oldest remaining hanger, but it looks as though the whole place is falling into disrepair, i hope this is not the case, as its a very very interesting spot...hope you enjoy our pictures, and i hope the log is valid without the required pub parking picture... sevabo Found FTF again, arrived this place and saw wrecked helicopter on the roof [:D] weird!!! anyway we dont have time to eat Hilux and Barra Burger as we were in hurry leaving for next cache before dusk. Can't see the plane clearly, but it is there. WanderingAus Found WanderingAus wandered by on day 50 of a "climatic refugee" trip, and had a lot of trouble getting a photo with me and the gpsr with a plane in the photo. Every time I drove past there were FA-18s taking off, but every time I stopped they were nowhere to be seen. Set on burst rate (15 frames per second) I finally managed to get a shot of a USAF military tanker taking off. The composite photo shows wheels just off the ground, wheels fully up, and the overhead shot. There is a delay between each chosen frame because it takes a while for the camera to save 30 frames before the next burst can be taken. I do have another 300 odd frames, including some where the aircraft occupies less than 20 pixels. TFTC The Morris Found Lots of birdlife here today and thanks to a boat tour on the Mary River we were able to identify all of them. Our favourite (apart from the magnificant jabiru) is the jacana but they are too quick to photograph with the other requirements. Here is Geogirl with an egret. It may be the intermediate egret but we aren't skilled enough to distinguish them. TFTC NTSTROM Found Absolutely not one bird to be found on the billabong today (see photo). Feel free to also add any other pictures you have taken near gz as its a very photogenic location.

A physical cache container was not placed at this location as maintenance can be very tedious and the wet season may cause problems as this boardwalk goes underwater! Congrats NTStrom and Gibbo for finding the bug before i did! NTSTROM Found Nice easy virtual find. Thanks TGP, email sent. TFTC gibbo003 Found Found and email sent. Nevertheless it is still a well needed break along the long and lonely Stuart Highway.

Up there! Shifter Brains Found Very quick find, right under the nose of some grey nomads, who thought we were leaving messages for friends. denisjoh1 Found Found it! Glad too as I need the attached facilities - urgently; Took Nothing - as there was nothing there - Left Poodle. TFTC The Morris Found Found on the Bucket Trip on our way to Mataranka. Mr Morris wandered off to the amenities while Lady Morris looked, located and was signing the log when a muggle appeared from her van and proceeded to eat her breakfast at the next table. And of course chatted away. Mr Morris realising what had happened wandered around to the other side and engaged her in conversation, allowing Lady Morris to replace the cache unobserved. We had visions of being there for some time. TF this series which has provided us with some interesting stops along the way. The Red Devils Found A nice easy find, after confiding in 4 Grey nomads who were most intrigued, this shelter wasnt here the last time we passed thru. In fact the only thing here then (about 10 years ago) was the water tank. TNLNSL.... Avagomob Found An easy find once we went to the right spot. Thanks TeamGeoPlesk sevabo Found found it easily. Thanks for bringing me there [;)] Everlasting Found Found the cache - wait for while until muggles leave. SL. Thanks TeamGeoPlesk for organising the cache and hunt. HDSpringer Found First find on trip to Darwin on the Harleys to the Ulysses Club Odyssey. The Reluctant Companion had a quick find - jumped in and grabbed the cache before the GPS booted up. What a great idea to hide caches at several places along this highway. It was a welcome diversion. A grey nomad muggle gave us heartache as we were unable to sign the log until we made all sorts of excuses - then we were unable to re hide the log until we thought he was gone. However when we got back to the bikes there he was ready for another chat. TNLN. TFTC. flashwillie Found the colour matches WanderingAus Found WanderingAus wandered by on day forty-eight of a 6 month trip Wandering Australia and made an easy find, but due to high muggle activity I had to wait a couple of hours before grabbing it. I retired to a distance to complete the log, and on returning a couple of minutes later another muggle was sitting looking straight towards GZ, so I took it back to the caravan (at the other end of the camping area), and was able to safely return it in total darkness at 9:00 PM, My find No 630, LCC, TNLNSL, grabbed Pathtag, dropped my WanderingAus Happy New Year 2008 Gold GC in for a visit before grabbing it back again. T4TH TeamGeoPlesk Keith TruckerBill Found Pulled over just up the road with an overwidth load of macinery bound for the Bootu Mine (10 Km North of Banka Banka, about 40 Km North of the cache). Escort driver had a bad case of diarrhoea and pulled in to use the facilities, so I walked the couple of hundred metres to find the cache, and when he emerged I told him I was concerned when he took so long - like I cared, but he gave me a lift back to the truck anyway. Thanks, Bill. Posspet Boys Found I was lucky that there was no one there but it was a nice easy find and a good chance for a break. Cheers from the Posspet Boys -Desert to rainforest to desert trip 08. JO_V_AL Found Yeehaa my second FTF - as stated it was an easy one but still fun. Unfortunately 2 German tourists were camped at GZ so we had to let them in on the secret as I wasn't driving passed without looking - as I will NEVER be back this way - it's "A BLOODY LONG WAY" and I think we have done it enough for my lifetime. Do like the history connection with all these caches - we often follow explorers' travels when we are out in these remote areas - how did they do it?? and more importantly WHY did they?? I'm glad they did though - I LOVE Aus. The pencil was broken and I did not have a sharpener. Only a little plastic lizard was in the cache. TNLN TFTH red tag Found After a cursory look in the dark previously, I returned today to discover that of course I had been looking in all the wrong places! A typical gibbo hide with a dash of humour! The river was not so rapid today! Thanks, gibbo003! Everlasting Found Accompanied with Darwin Lizard for the day. Found it - no problem. SL. Thanks gibbo003 for organising the cache and hunt. Darwin Lizard Found While accompanied with Everlasting, it was Everlasting who found it. Now I learned that caches can be hiding in any way, not only in ground or under rock. Smile. TeamGeoPlesk Found found it! great hide. good way to fill in time before a midnight flight! Kerr NT Found Managed to pick this one up on my final cache round for 2007. Thanks Gibbo you have kept us all very busy over the past few months. Top effort. gibbo003 Note Managed to move this one to higher ground. Beagle Team Found Finally got back to this and some heavy rain had taken all the challenge out of it. Previously I must have been right on top of it. Clever cache hide trewcrew Found Tricky, GPS not very reliable. Wits alone and some helpful clues. Glad I studied up on Swahili. Kubanza asante.
