<p><strong>Goolwa</strong> is considered to be a historic town in South Australia and was established in 1857. Before 1837 Goolwa was briefly considered as the site of the colony's capital; however, the treacherous waters of the Murray Mouth for shipping made it unsuitable as a major port. Goolwa was Australia's first inland port (1857). Australia's first railway was built to connect Goolwa to Port Elliot and later extended to Victor Harbor, allowing goods to move from river boats to sea boats, so that neither had to negotiate the Murray Mouth.</p>
<p>The local Alexandrina Council have declared Cadell Street (the main street) a heritage zone and encourage businesses to be painted in heritage colours. In following that heritage theme the council have installed hitching posts and a other heritage items.</p>

<p><span style="font-size: small"><span style="font-family: Times New Roman"><font color="#3333ff"><b><big><big>P</big></big></b>olicing in South Australia began on 28th April 1838 with the swearing in of an Inspector of Police with 10 mounted and 10 foot constables. This was the first centrally controlled police force in Australia; The overlanding of sheep and cattle from New South Wales saw the expansion of the frontiers of settlements north and west of Adelaide. Police personnel were often at the forefront of that expansion, in some instances acting as explorers, but also to protect pastoralists. In the interests of settlers and travellers, the Commissioners of Police at the time established Police Posts. Julia Creek Police Station was established in late 1842 by Mounted Constable James McLean to provide protection for pastoralists, shepherds and flocks.</font> </span></span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: small"><span style="font-family: Times New Roman"><font color="#3333ff">The Julia Creek Police Station was the first permanent mounted police post north east of Gawler. It was established well before permanent police stations at Burra, Kapunda or Angaston and there was no other police presence further to the north east at the time. It is believed to have been a small stone building. Julia Creek Police Station was staffed by two mounted constables (troopers) with the personnel being rotated on a six monthly deployment basis. A Native Constable was attached to the station for guide purposes during some of its existence. The police station was issued with three horses. The duties were to patrol to the various pastoral stations on the River Light, Burra Creek and Mt. Bryan. Julia Creek Police Station provided a base for mounted police patrols at least as far as from present day Keyneton to Mt. Bryan.</font> </span></span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: small"><span style="font-family: Times New Roman"><font color="#3333ff">This police station was operating well before each of the now recognised towns of the district including Kapunda, Eudunda, Burra and Morgan were established and at the time was quite isolated. There were no recognised roads, and the only form of communication would have been by letter delivered by horse and rider. In 1846 the S.A. Mining Association applied to the Commissioner of Police to establish a police station at Burra Burra Mines. Nearly a year after the opening of the mines at Burra Burra, the Julia Creek Police Station was closed in October 1846 and the personnel and stores were removed to open a police station at the rapidly expanding mines.</font> </span></span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: small"><span style="font-family: Times New Roman"><font color="#3333ff">The mounted constables of Julia Creek, some of whom were Troopers McLean, Dawson, Eastwood, Carter, Pow, Lamb and McMahon, kept journals of their patrols and activities while at the station, which is of great importance to the early history of South Australia and the South Australia Police.</font><font color="#3333ff"> <br />

<p><em>The following information is from the "On Track" newsletter issued to passengers in April 2008.</em></p>
<br />
<p>The 'township' of Cook is as remote as it gets. The town is named ater former Australian Prime Minister, Sir Joseph Cook. It was once a thriving railway town with a population of around 300 people, with a two-storey school, swimming pool, general store, hospital, post office, locomotive workshop, airstrip, cemetery, and a golf course completely devoid of even a single blade of grass. At its peak, Cook even boasted a brass band! Cook's importance as a railway town diminished with privatisation of the Commonwealth Government's railway infrastructure during the mid 1990's. It still remains a critical refuelling station for the Indian Pacific. Today Cook is a ghost town with just four permanent residents. However, it does play host to locomotive drivers of the Indian Pacific and various freight trains, as the drivers change at the end of their shifts and wait for the next to start. Most of Cook's old buildings still stand and are in reasonably good order, which makes for a fascinating walking tour. You will have the chance to wander around Cook for a short period.</p>

<p>George Goyder was surveyer who travlled thought a lot of Australia. This rest stop reminds us of the "Goyder's Line'.</p>
<p>Goyder's line of travel, which amounted to nearly 5,000 km on horseback, marked off the line of drought and became known as Goyder's Line of Rainfall. He drew a line indicating the limit of the rainfall which coincided with the southern boundary of saltbush country. It separated lands suitable for agriculture from those fit for pastoral use only. It also marked areas of reliable and unreliable annual rainfall. Not all agreed with his Line and some even called it Goyder's line of foolery.</p>

I really appreciated this simple drive by becaus there are so few around and when you are just travelling through you don't wnat to spend a lot of time solving puzzles or doing multis. So many caches in Adelaide are difficult puzzles requireing dedicated time.
I don't agree with logged comment 'Why put a cache here?. For me it was perfect and much appreciated. I left Endian geocoin. It is now safetly where it wants to be. Took travel bug and am yet to look at its history.

There has been some homework done.
It's a good container and it has a GC.com note inside. But contents were a bit thin.
Strangely there is a date of October 2006!
Co-ords were a bit off, but not that far, on the edge of the EPE, and a whole lot closer than the clue gets you!
In the end I just poked through the bark around every tree nearby and came up with the goods.
BUT - Location, Location, Location. WHY? This has to be one of the worst locations I have come across.
So I entered a log in the book and added a finger puppet to the near empty box.
On the whole this cache doesn't make sense. Why hide a cache before you've found one? And how did you know things like putting the log book and pen in a zip bag if you've never seen one?

<p><font face="Verdana" color="#339966" size="3"><strong>And so mindful that bushwalkers are often the first to find all sorts of strange things, UFOs, Yetis and the like, we decided it may be appropriate to report it to the authorities. <p><font face="Verdana" color="#339966" size="3"><strong>It turns out they need to take these things seriously, and even though there was no report of a big yellow thing being lost, someone had to take a look.</strong></font></p>

Ground zero is not exactly where the cache is, but it is right in the middle of where you will find it. I would recommend caution if you are taking geokids on the hunt with you - they should stay about 14 metres behind (or in front) of you if you go to ground zero.<br />

It has landed initially at “The Old Brush” Event where I hope to enlist some fellow cachers in distributing a number of Boomerangs across Aus and possibly NZ.
<p>Now it’s not a race. It is up to the initial finder to determine where and when they will deposit the boomerang – they may be going on holidays or a business trip in the next few months – a placement by the end of 2007 would be desired. </p>
<p>The idea is to try and get this Boomerang to a distant location and to track its movement home. Once the boomerang reaches the full extent of its range (amplitude?) as nominated by the initial holder - it should return home. </p>
<p>It is fine if the return trip is somewhat circuitous… </p>

This was a bit of a mixup... I was expecting this cache to be close to, or right next to the GC cache with the same coords (GC1GE8Z). Unfortunately, it was actually inside the other container, which didnt have much else in it. It looks as though some of the logs for the GC cache have been written in this Logbook as the cachers have not claimed a find on this GCA cache, only the GC cache. (If that all makes sense?)
I extracted the cache from the GC cache, and brought it home, and only discovered the log issue then. At this stage, i'll probably just tag the logs which appear to be for the other cache, and then rehide this one to continue on its mission...ack son of hackNoteplaced here the 20/09/08.

Not to mention eventually the saifsation of locating the box [:D]<br>
Thanks Dik for another challenging hide.<br>Cheers
SUEDENHARRFoundThis was a bugger. I visited this area three times in as many days. I was not planning to complete it until Thurs next week but I became obesest with it and after watching the efforts of Four Fun, I had to be first. It is lucky I am the boss where I work as it is an hour drive each way but this does not apply at home as I had to finish my chores before playing today.
After no luck on day one, I emailed Dik telling him of what I did applying the 20 seconds; more than likely he is still laughing and he replied saying to revisit the meaning or application of 20 seconds (there's a hint).
I went back on Day two to visit two sites that were very obvious amongst the natural vegetation and still came away empty handed. I emailed a clan member (Chwiliwr) who put me on the right line.
Today, a shorter walk (from the car)to revisit one of my spots and found the cache nearby. I can not believe how close I was the day before. The cache was still hard to locate due to the cam job.
Now I can concentrate on other things beside this dam cache. Thank Dik for a very memorable cache.

Its going to Kangaroo Island.Trail06FoundWhat a great hide and what an adventure in retrieving it. I had tried this cache once before but the terrain beat us. This time, I grabbed a local who was familiar with the terrain and we ventured out on a hot and windy Saturday afternoon. We dropped to sea level and navigated the rocks and incoming tide, only to search in vain. My local consultant then shot up the cliff like a mountain goat and searched all the nooks and crannys. A cry rang out and I see my friend leaping in the air with alarm, dislodging a large rock in the process, which narrowly missed me at the bottom of the cliff in the process. (Thanks Winter dragon for setting a trap for both us....very funny!) I see my buddy then lean down and retrieve the something that had scared both of us. Hurray, the cache was ours! We signed the log but as we made our way back along the rocks, we realised that we had left our return walk along the beach a little late. The tide had almost covered our only escape up the cliff and we were beginning to wonder if cliff rescue were answering their phone. We managed to get by the rocks just before the water covered them and climbed to freedom very relieved. Thanks all for a great adventure. We will move it along soon.winterdragonNoteDecided that Lizzy could do with some coastal rock action, so she's now near the sea. Very cute container. Hopefully back out tomorrow.winglenNoteLizzy has had great travels to rocky places this week. We took her to 'Bats in the Belfry', 'Legoland' and 'Namadgi Billabong' this week - the first two in particular are spectacular rocky places. Didn't leave her there however, because those caches don't get many visitors. She is happily surrounded by rocks in a rocky location, where she should be safe from muggles.winglenFoundVery funny story attached to this. I left work a bit early for a bike ride, only to encounter light rain, then heavy rain. Despite having a raincoat I became soaked (but the rain is great and not complaining). Found myself on Aspen Island but without the coords for Lizzy - I only knew she was in a tree hollow, but had no idea what I was looking for. The walk up was easy as we fluked the gap in the escarpment. Lizzy has now moved on and we will post the co-ordinates for her new home very shortly. Took: Lizzy
Left: not a thing
GeoMonkeysNotei wonder if i have over rated this one?
the location is not a high risk location it is just dificult to access... meaning there is no trail and you might , just might have to go the long way around, but its definitely not a 1/1
its been ages, if no one attempts it soon, ill move it down to the foot path out side my house. at least there someone might trip over it and log a find.
GeoMonkeysNoteAhh now you have a perfect resting place... none shall bother you here for some time, i hope, ( insert evil laugh). Your sanctuary is guarded by high rock ledges and few access points, in fact there are no trails in this area. terrain varies from 3 to 4.5 ( no ropes needed) be careful when you choose your approach. It is safe if you consider your options and look at going around instead of always straight up.
From the way point you will be able to see Lizzy, but may need a boost up, or a long stick to retrieve her.
Don't forget to turn around and check out the view once you have found Lizzy, one of the best on the coast.
terrain 4 (max) difficulty 1 ( you will see him sttaight away.)
GeoMonkeysFoundha! i have you now ... lizzy!
What a way to finish off a day of geocaching...

Then I see the cache has already been picked up on the 6th why didn't i notice that this morning before i left? aah maybe its because i read the description where you can't log it as a find until you have placed the cache in a new location within a week, now that its been over a week does that mean you now have to change your find to a DNF?
Don't mind me I'm just a little upset about my own stupidity looking for a cache which if i paid more attention to the logs would have realised it had already been found [:)]keenerFoundsnuck up to GZ as to not alert Lizzy of my presence, Crikey! she put up a fight as I attempted to bag her. Take the decimal portion and multiply by 60

Depending on the season this may offer a pleasant camping location with a water back drop, beneath the Algebuckina Railway Bridge, or it could be as dry as a bone. <p>This cache overlooks the back of our home of three years in Hahndorf. From the cache coordinates, our old house lies about 750 metres away at a bearing of 261°True.</p>
<p>On Thursday 15th June 2006, the water pipes in our ceiling suddenly burst under the strain of constant cold temperatures freezing them. No-one was home at the time, so mains pressure water pumped into our roof space for up to an hour before someone was able to shut off the water supply. Every carpet in the place was saturated, the bathroom ceiling collapsed under the weight of waterlogged insulation, and all kitchen cabinets had soaked up enough water to write them off completely. After staying in the house for a further four nights, the stench of mould in the place was making us feel ill, and we had no choice but to move to another house at very short notice. Lucky for us we were only renting the house.</p>
<p><a href="http://geocaching.com.au/gallery/image/100"><img alt="" src="http://gallery.geocaching.com.au/pics/ga0484/thumbs/tn_426.jpg" /> </a></p>
<p>We were not the only people in the hills area to experience this sort of phenomena during a bitterly cold spell, and there were certainly worse damaged houses than ours around. It could have been much worse for us, but it was a very stressful and uncertain time that we hope to never have to go through again.</p>
<p>We decided to place this cache here as a memento to our time living in Hahndorf and the events that caused us to leave. The cache is a round 300ml black container placed as a drive-by. It contains a log book, pencil and a few swaps.</p>Base of the tree.shaunsterFoundWrong. It's there. Day 323 of non-stop caching. [:D]yeti840FoundFound this with the help of team swoggers, well sort of. A great hide and great views.lgthomasNot FoundSpent 20 mins looking for the cache. Eventually gave it away and decided to go back o nline and look at previous logs. Unfortunately, they wern't much help. Will have to leave for another day.WaterloggedFoundEnjoyed walking the full loop of the track. Made better by finding a cache along the way.
EverlastingFoundFound the cache at 4pm. Enjoyed walk along to the cache. Admire the bushland and track. Thank you for organise the cache and hunt.!mikeFoundLoverly walk through the bush on a nice sunny day.
Keep to the track I said, but Anne would not have that. "Follow the arrow" she says, "it will be shorter".
So we take a poor track in general direction. We then backtracked....
Fellow cachers, if team nibbler says "follow the track", then FOLLOW THE TRACK!!!!!
Trust me, team nibbler knows best.
Lastly, I would say the terrain difficulty deserves higher than a 1.5 :-)
Posspet BoysFoundWhat really made this cache special was the Echidna that was on the side of the track on my way out. TNLNSL. What history this structure had? The Echidna by the way was a bit timid and didn't really want his photo taken but I sat still and let the mossies bite whilst I waited for the oportune time. Hopefully other cachers will have this experience.TeamHurtleFoundA nice walk, a bit easier after having done 'Oh Gorge-ous One!' Would also like to know more about the 'square'!
TN Left a cloth patch, SLstanleyFoundWent for an evening cache, which took a bit longer than expected! We took the wrong track and had to bush bash a bit, thankfully the kangaroos had made a few tracks to follow. We finally found GZ but our GPS decided to point at one spot (the wrong spot) for about 10 minutes before deciding the cache was in the opposite direction! So, once the GPS caught up, the cache was found, TNLNSL. Thanks to Nibbler for this one, look forward to finding some more in here!
-stanleysfour-funFoundNo Echidnas to be seen today but a lot of fog. Had a very pleasant walk at lunchtime, in an area that deserves more caches. TN Left an aussie flag keyring. Why the fence? Why a Cache in this spot? Because it's my first cache that I have hidden. The fence.... A standard 6" garden variety fence in a circular fashion at a busy road junction.
There is no need to jump the fence to find the cache. The cache is a film canister with logbook and stash note only, so bring your own pen.
So..... Why the fence?
If you know the answer, then please share it with the rest of us. Or just tell us your theory of __Why the fence?__
winterdragonFoundI think I found this cache. Or did I find the GC cache? Should the GCA listing be archived if the GC listing is the main one?AlanseeFoundFound the cache quickly which gave me more time to ponder the fence. It was so that some clever cacher could put a cache there of course! :). ThanksfiresafeFoundGood question - what is the fence for. A quick find. TFTC. But which one do I log GC or GA
lava12FoundI found it with Everlasting. Thanks :-)gr8cherokeeFoundlogged this one on GC and thought I may as well log it on GCA as wellhittin the roadFoundJust for a short afternoon stroll to test new settings on OZI CE. still needs some adjustment. found it eventually and signed log. The fence could be to offer some sort of protection to what is probably quite historical given the age of the trees in the enclosure.
TFTCEverlastingFoundFound the cache at 7pm. Admire old trees. Thank you for organise the cache and hunt.snowoneFoundStruggled for quite a while. I was ready to pac it in, but diesel was more patient than me.
Signed the log
Thanks for the cache
(I think the fence is to protect the tree from us and us from the tree)
Also logged on the other sitediesel69FoundSearched for quite a while before finding thisTeamHurtleFoundNice walk from home. Found my FIRST cache!!! Took a few mins to find once there.
I believe the fence is actually there to protect the very large, old gumtree from foot traffic and vandals!!
Removed quite a few pieces of rubbish from around the site also!
Thanks for the effort!TeamLangyFoundThis was my second attempt at this one after a work day - and today was not a good day to go cache hunting as I was in somewhat of a mood.
<p>
What is it with the fence? On one side of it my GPS said one thing and on the other something completely different! Both of them were fairly inaccurate and the cache was found by the semi-crippled EmZee with the "Other James Brown" (another colleague - not yet a cacher) a little embarrassed as he had looked in the hidey hole not a minute before.
<p>
Signed the log for both of us.!mikeFoundMy second attempt at this. First time I just could not see it. Came back with more equipment and found it immediatly.
Posspet BoysFoundot to keep those trees in there somehow.
Quick stop on the way to collect Setsujoku for a caching day out.
TNLNSL. Could only sign log actually!four-funFoundTook a little searching but eventually found. So many possible little hidey holes! The plant along the fence line is already starting to look a bit worse for wear. I hope this wasn't from goecachers searching? Because its not there!
As for the fence its obviously there to keep the spirits from the ancient aboriginal burial ground from straying. I found it with Cal after heading to Ardrossan to find a playground, leaving the girls back in Pt. Julia.

Thanks Alex (your map helped!)
four-funFoundI was heading towards the northern suburbs to check on a couple other caches so it seemed like a good idea to go a little bit further and grab this one.
A very pretty and peaceful location to contemplate the water from (or your navel perhaps!)
Took the GCA sticker (coming to a cache near you very soon), left a split keyring and the 'shelldrake' TB.

This cache is on the far side of Faraway Hill Outstation. You could say it is off the beaten track. Perhaps if you travelled between Yunta and Morgan or took a back road from Burra to Broken Hill it might be almost a drive-by ... but what a drive! This is the land that gave rise to our national psyche.
Now when you get here the cache is not too hard to find, however, unless you are verticallly gifted you may need to stand on something to see/retrieve it.
Enjoy this remote location and when you find the cache take pride in having gone somewhere 'out of the ordinary - outback'.
Posspet BoysFoundAfter a drive down from Yunta we finally got here. The roads had no traffic at all except for this last stretch when we came across the only other car during the drive. Tried to go direct to the cache in the 4WD but the ground was very soft after recent rains last week in the area. It's amazing what efforts they went to store water in the past only to end up ruined years later. I always wonder at the energy that went in to building and as history shows, it was not that long ago.
The cache is intact in it's obvious location but the container is becoming brittle. The next Geocacher could bring a new container or make some repairs with tape to the current one so that it lasts a bit longer.
Thanks Alex for bringing us here. Sorry that we did not camp the night but the flies were solid around here at the moment. I think that they are enjoying the water in the creek.richaryFoundA long time since someone claimed gold, now I get to claim silver after camping about 100m away on the way over to visit my parents in Coffs Harbour. Nice spot though no water at the moment. Was a very pleasant camping place as well. TNLNSL, thanks Alex.four-funFoundWhen this cache first appeared I thought 'that would be a great spot to visit one weekend' and it was an excellent spot.
Convinced No.1 son that we should go for a little drive in his 4WD and he had a ball as well.
Camped nearby the cache for the night and enjoyed the most spectacular night skies I have seen for years. All in all a great way and place to recharge the spirit.
Thanks for taking me out there Alex, definately one of the most satisfying caches I have done to date. In the wake of the devastating EarthQuake and Tsunamis that have ripped through the Asian continents. We have decided to give all geocachers the opportunity to show their true spirit of caring and humanity..The Red Cross Asia Quake and Tsunamis Appeal is collecting money for the victims of the area.
The appeal aims to provide assistance to some 1,000,000 people after the strongest earthquake in 40 years caused massive tidal waves, killing at least 110.000 people, according to local authorities, and leaving more than one million displaced and homeless..
Countries affected include Sri Lanka, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, and the Maldives.
The appeal aims to bring immediate support to relief operations of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies operating in the affected region..
Donations can be deposited direct to the red cross at: <a href="https://www.redcross.org.au/Donations/onlineDonations.asp">https://www.redcross.org.au/Donations/onlineDonations.asp</a>
Please tick the boxes on the donation page to recieve a receipt and be sure to post the receipt with your find.
Or you can post your donation as thus:
Send a cheque or money order to GPO Box 9949 in your capital city. (Australia only)
(please dont forget to indicate the Tsunami appeal for your donation to go towards).
I will also accept donations to ANY fund, (word vision etc) that are towards this disaster fund.
You may find it tricky to post a receipt on the find log, they are emailed in a PDF format, I saved mine in Adobe Acrobat and converted to a Jpg for posting to the Geo.com page.
<p>Or Alt-Printscreen may be useful and edit the saved image in a paint program.
If you have too much trouble, mail the receipt to donate@teampiggy.com and I will convert it for you then email it back top be posted on the page.
Finds noted without receipts will be deleted without question. I will accept any receipt that is a valid donation towards an appeal for the tsunami disaster.
Thanks for your caring and generosity to those in a time of need.
My initial aim is to reach <strike>$10,000</strike>$15,000.00 in donations for this cause.

Would love to see a follow up program to see whether communities are back in place, or areas have become ghost towns.

Receipt 219992 for $100.gr8cherokeeFoundLike others we donated to the Tsunamis appeal at the time but did not keep our receipt, so I have been reluctant to log this as a find. However I see others have had the same problem with the receipt bit and still logged it so I hope it is ok with everyone that we log this cache as a find. If not let me know and I will retract it. winterdragonFoundI donated to the Tsunami Appeal, but it was so long ago that there's now little hope of producing the receipt. I agree with the other finders that this was a terrible tragedy, and hope that the new tsunami warning system will mean we can prevent such huge losses in the future.
I've done some digging on the GCA forums, and uncovered some of the history of this cache, and its counterpart on GC. Seems like there was a lot of heated debate at the time, so I can understand why you might have such a strong personal attachment to it. Apologies if I caused offence, as that wasn't my intention.Team PiggyNoteConsidering it is GCA -001 it has a history to it as the first GCA cache to go public.
Why archive it? I'm sure it isnt upsetting your day!
You can always toddle off over to GC to get some caches archived if you have the need too....
As a note it can still be logged, and has been by some point hunters since its archive.
I am sure if you (also) lost friends in this disaster your tone would be quite different?winterdragonNoteI have to say I agree with GeoMonkeys - it's no longer possible to log this cache, so there seems little point in keeping it active - sentimental reasons aside. After all, if it was listed on GC, then it would long ago have been archived without appeal.
To paraphrase a famous philosopher - "It's not pinin', it's passed on. This cache is no more. It's ceased to be. It's expired and gone to meet it's maker. It's a stiff. Bereft of life, it rests in peace. If you hadn't nailed it to the website it'd be pushing up the daisies. It's metabolic processes are now 'istory. It's off the twig! It's kicked the bucket, it's shuffled off this mortal coil, run down the curtain and joined the bleedin' choir invisibile. This is an ex-cache!"Team PiggyNoteConsidering it is GCA -001 it has a history to it as the first GCA cache to go public.

Whilst the apparent hypocrisy is rife in the US, the changes in their sucky cache listing guidlines in the last 3 years are a factor in why the recent cache was not allowed whilst the 9/11 one remains. I'm hoping this is the last I need to read/write/hear/say about the whole thing.

Our log on the secondary site was changed to a note after criticism from US-based cachers as to the motives of people donating to this worthy cause. Apparently it's ok to have caches supporting US disasters (see GC1C90) but not if it is somewhere outside the US, no matter that this disaster is on an unprecedented scale. Oh the hypocrisy! Shame!

I hope our donations help in some small way...
I find it amazing that there are so many petty minded cachers on the gc.com forums with nothing better to do all day than argue about the legitimacy of caches in the face of the biggest human tragedy ever...
